Back from National Archives
Written by Jim Kenney

I just got back from my second trip to the US National Archives in Washington, DC.  I took a red-eye flight from San Francisco, landed and drove straight to the Archives to research video footage for my documentary.

I'm not sure if there is another place like this on earth, where you can go view and copy archival footage (mostly from 1930s to 1970s) for free. They literally allow you to pull tapes off the shelf, to patch to your camera or deck, and to copy. And this year, they've started the process of copying everything to DVD, so we don't have to worry about the degrading VHS viewing copies (for those of us with no budget for professional transfers...).

It's a great place, although I got mentored by an expert last year on how to properly research.

Still blurry-eyed from scanning video for two straight days on little sleep.

Back from Slamdance
Written by Jim Kenney

Real Ideas Studio is back from Slamdance.

We had a great experience in Park City. It was much easier than expected to get around, to gain access to films and events and especially to meet professionals from all segments of the industry. Our students met many high-profile people willing to help them with their films, and some of our students even got work !

We loved the Slamdance Film Festival staff and its fellow filmmakers. Everyone had a blast because Slamdance is so upbeat, friendly and truly-indie. It was an amazing fit for our students, and we're hoping to do it again next year.

Park City was a very laid-back environment. The working studio was in an apartment below the faculty house. Some students ended up sleeping there, cooking there, and sneaking into our hottub late at night... : )

I'm really proud of the films that were made in just one week. Our judges commented on that incredible achievement. Thanks to everyone who made it possible.

It's About Creativity
Written by Claire Erwin

Claire ErwinReal Ideas is about creativity.

It’s about aiding the process and having positive impact through mentorship and collaboration.  The creative arts is an area that can be intimidating for a person to get their start, add to it the expectation of how fast communications and campaigns are built today and you can just feel the pressure in the air.  I believe that what we do at Real Ideas helps students and young professionals know how to collaborate to the best of their abilities and to build on a team structure of many versus the skill structure of one.  When you combine the best strengths in the creative ares together on a team, you see fabulous results.  I see a promising future for all the students who have taken the Real Ideas challenge.

This is a community of Alumni and mentors who will be connected for many years, even careers long and it’s a great feeling to know all the talent and promise that can be brought together to create real impact in what they are capable of creating.  What I think is most special about the project is that it’s on a global scale.   A Real Ideas Alumni and faculty or industry mentor can be from anywhere in the world and as this program grows, I suspect so will the collaborations that were started because of a Real Ideas Studio connection.  It’s a global creative, a global reach, a global community.

Sundance Slamdance '09
Written by Eric Finkelman

eric finkelmanHey everyone. Eric here and I am extremely proud of our new website launch. As you can see there are some amazing features, such as upcoming opportunities, forms for grant submission, job postings and more. As our resources multiply each day and our networks extend, I am proud to be a part of this ever-growing community.

Upon returning to New York and settling back into the groove, it occurred to me that this year's Slamdance/Sundance RIS Challenge was one of the most rewarding and exciting programs we have had to date. The independent filmmaking community, the celebrities, and the Slamdance crowd all embraced every aspect of what we were doing and allowed us the opportunity to create a positive, constructive and uninhibited environment where creativity was left to flourish. We have had some great programs in Cannes but at least in Utah we knew where to buy batteries and firewire cables this time.

I want to congratulate all of the teams at this year’s program. Each film is engrained with its own characteristics and professional qualities that make it stand apart from the next. I look forward to seeing what you guys do next.

Btw, here is a picture Bun stitched from one of the mountains. Pretty sweet.

Speaking Of Global Communities...
Written by Sebastien

My three favorite things about being a mentor for Real Ideas Studio are as follows:

  1. The students I get to meet, work with, and learn from.
  2. My fellow RIS mentors who teach me almost as much.
  3. Helping a global community of creative people.

As it turns out, I'm doing a lot of #3 lately. During my term off from heading up the Digital Design program at Vancouver Film School I've been working with friends at a new media company here in Vancouver called Zeros 2 Heroes. Their big focus in life? You guessed it - creating online communities. My role involves working with the product team on new content creation tools so that as wide a group of people as possible can put their creativity to use and be content-creators rather than just content-consumers.

With all different types of organizations looking to develop more opportunities for people to collaborate online, I think it's safe to say this idea of growing global communities isn't going away anytime soon.
