Back from National Archives

I just got back from my second trip to the US National Archives in Washington, DC.  I took a red-eye flight from San Francisco, landed and drove straight to the Archives to research video footage for my documentary.

I'm not sure if there is another place like this on earth, where you can go view and copy archival footage (mostly from 1930s to 1970s) for free. They literally allow you to pull tapes off the shelf, to patch to your camera or deck, and to copy. And this year, they've started the process of copying everything to DVD, so we don't have to worry about the degrading VHS viewing copies (for those of us with no budget for professional transfers...).

It's a great place, although I got mentored by an expert last year on how to properly research.

Still blurry-eyed from scanning video for two straight days on little sleep.

Back from Slamdance

Real Ideas Studio is back from Slamdance.

We had a great experience in Park City. It was much easier than expected to get around, to gain access to films and events and especially to meet professionals from all segments of the industry. Our students met many high-profile people willing to help them with their films, and some of our students even got work !

We loved the Slamdance Film Festival staff and its fellow filmmakers. Everyone had a blast because Slamdance is so upbeat, friendly and truly-indie. It was an amazing fit for our students, and we're hoping to do it again next year.

Park City was a very laid-back environment. The working studio was in an apartment below the faculty house. Some students ended up sleeping there, cooking there, and sneaking into our hottub late at night... : )

I'm really proud of the films that were made in just one week. Our judges commented on that incredible achievement. Thanks to everyone who made it possible.
